My name is Kate Shallan and I am Event Chair for the Aim For The Stars Auction benefiting CSF to be held November 13, 2010 at the Hotel Del’s Oceanfront Ballroom. We are retooling our usual dinner-dance concept into a high-energy party and auction with food stations resulting in more of the donated dollars going right to our schools that desperately need us to “aim for the stars” this year.  We want more of our parents and community stakeholders to be included in the event than ever before and therefore have lowered the price to $100 per ticket.  For families with younger children, we will have a concurrent event at the Community Center called “We are the Stars, a fun Party and Mini-auction” providing dinner and fun activities for children in grades K thru 6, while their parents get out and have a great time for a great cause. Our event starts at 6pm and will end at 9pm. Some of our Business Partners will provide “after parties” with festivities to suit those folks who are just getting started at 9pm.

This is “Captain Kate” of the “CSF Enterprise”. Ready to boldly go where no event chair has gone before…into the Blogosphere! Sorry to be so corny, but I was hoping to entice you to read further so I can tell you all about the “Aim for the Stars Auction” benefiting Coronado Schools Foundation on November 13, 2010 at the Hotel Del. I plan on posting an entry every week or so to chart the progress and inform the reader (more than one, I hope) of this fun event. I want to give a personal perspective of what is involved in a community event like ours and perhaps inspire a few readers to jump in and contribute, as attendees, volunteers, donors, or any combination of the above!

Since I said this would offer a personal account of the event, I will give a brief  recap of my involvement in CSF”s Fall Fundraiser. For the last three years I have filled a chairing capacity at the event either as Event Chair or, last year, I was Silent Auction Cochair with the fabulous RuthAnn Fisher, while  the amazing duo of Wanda Aurich and Pam Hammett took the reins as Event Chairs. It is astounding what one learns from experience in these affairs, and this year I hope to apply that knowledge to a very different event than the ones held in the past few years. More on that in the next posting. Then right after the big night, I will retire. (My husband made me write that last line.)

Speaking of my husband, he has been working right along side of me during all of these events. It leaves little time for his “other job” as Vice President and General Manager of the Hotel Del Coronado, but he seems to manage. My children, Makena, a 6^th grader at CMS and Geordy, a Sophomore at CHS in the CoSA Musical Theater program, are equally supportive (and by supportive I mean they stay reasonably interested and out of my way). This year the plan is to draw them in and have them volunteer some more time to the event. In fact that is the plan for everyone this year.  The success of this event will depend on the involvement of a broader sampling of the parents and community members that are stakeholders in the success of our schools.

In the next entry (“Captain’s log Stardate 04/30/2010”), I will spell out the new event and identify a few key volunteer opportunities. Carl Sagan said,” we’re made of star stuff…” so let’s prove him right!
